Freddy Mata a.k.a. Marateka has always had a fascination with design. He started his career as an architect in Maracaibo, Venezuela before going back to school and learning the art of furniture design in Melbourne, Australia.

After almost a decade working as a fine furniture designer/maker, he decided to pursue a more artistic approach of woodworking by applying to the Artists in Residence program at the Victorian Woodworkers Association where he is experimenting and developing his main body of work “Grainchromie” : the use of colour to enhanced timber’s end grain natural pattern to present his vision of the world.

As an immigrant, his work use architectural and woodworking knowledge to recognise arrangements on the environment and configuration of materials to create a connection, a sense of belonging to this world.
